Norris trophy voting: complete record

This is an update and expansion of Sturminator's thread.

This was the criteria Sturminator used:

Quote:

The list contains all defensemen from 78 to present who achieved at least one first place vote or two top-3 votes in any given year
I agree with Sturminator's reasoning and tried to keep his standard when possible. Two exceptions:

1) When extending the records backwards, we only have points totals, not complete voting records. When only point totals were available, I included all defensemen who received at least 2 voting points.

2) With expanded voting records in modern times, I changed the standard to include all defensemen who achieved at least one first place vote or two top-3 votes AND any defenseman who finished ahead of them in total points. Example: 2008-09 Norris voting.

Sturm's original standard worked for seasons in which writers only voted for the top 3. But with votes down to top 5, it doesn't make any sense to me to exclude Mark Streit, who actually appeared on more ballots than the 5 guys under him who do meet the original standard.

Here is the data, sorted alphabetically. I believe we have full records for every season since the Norris was first awarded in 1953-54, except 1954-55 (only top 6) and 1976-77 (only top 5).

If it's a typo, it exists in the HOH thread I used as a source.

Didn't mean on your part, it's more than likely an error because I don't think Wayne Connelly was ever a defenseman.

When compiling that list, I noticed a couple of other guys usually thought of as forwards getting token Norris consideration

Ron Stewart's 4th place finish in 57-58 is another one, though I think it's more likely a legit finish than Connelly's.

Bookmarked this thread for future ATD purposes.

Curious on how people view quantity over quality. For example:

Pat Stapleton

65-66: 3rd
68-69: 10th
69-70: 7th
70-71: 4th
71-72: 4th

Allan Stanley

56-57: 8th
59-60: 2nd
60-61: 3rd
61-62: 8th
62-63: 12th
63-64: 10th
65-66: 7th

Which record is more impressive?

DL44 01-06-2012 07:33 PM

It's so interesting seeing the dominant Dman per era (via the vote)....

Doug Harvey - Early 50's to the 60's
Pierre Pilote - 60's to the Late 60's
Bobby Orr - Late 60's to Mid-70's
Dennis Potvin - Mid 70's to Early 80's
Ray Bourque - Mid 80's to Late 90's
Nik Lidstrom - Late 90's to Present Day....

I wonder if future eras will be as cut'n'dry as these recent ones...
Like are we moving on the verge of the Shea Weber era for the next decade?
Or will there be a massive shuffle like the Art Ross of the last decade or so?

I don't think i presently see one Dman seizing it really as in the next perennial Norris finalist/and occasional winner for the next 8ish yrs...
Maybe Weber honestly...
Maybe Keith...

But one guy i didn't think of... but he consistently gets votes and could win one day.. especially if Washington craps the bed soooooo badly without him and if they return to elite level with him... Mike Green. If he turns out to be the straw that stirs the Washington drink... it can't be ignored... The Green Era may be upon us. At least it sounds environmentally friendly...

Honestly, if NHL awards weren't so based on hockey card stats, I could see Chara winning a couple in a row.

A few years ago, I thought Phaneuf had a good shot at being the next big thing, but then he regressed.

TheDevilMadeMe 01-16-2012 04:33 PM

Fixed an error - I was missing finishes below 5th for 1979-80.

early in '06 season, brendan shanahan said (i think on TSN) that he would pick phaneuf above the other rookies (ovechkin, crosby, lundqvist).

He should have won last year. IMO him and Weber are front runners this year.

I think Kelly has to take early 50s here , 4 consecutive 1st place should be enough to give an '''era''

Most of those were pre-Norris. This thread just lists Norris trophy results.

I'll sticky this if there's more interest - it's not like it's exactly hard to find right now though.

I don't really care I already have all those threads in my favorites

Andros 02-12-2012 02:27 PM

Wouldn't it be smarter to have this as a sticky/at least have a link to it somewhere visible on the history of hockey forum if anywhere? I guess all the info is available in the award voting topic but extracting data from it can be somewhat of a pain, considering how unorganized it is.

At one point, someone said he was making a spreadsheet of all the awards data on the HOH board. Guess it fell through. I could post this thread on the HOH board, but I think it's a lot more likely to fall through the cracks on that board, which is much more active than this one.

I really don't want to sticky this thread on the HOH board by itself, if we end up with too many sticky threads, it becomes a mess.

Good point, I'd just rather have full access on this thread rather than look for it anywhere else (the only known complete record to me).

Yeah, I can see that another sticky in HOH probably isn't a great idea. But I do think this thread is nice resource when it comes to conversations on that board, and it is currently pretty hard to find for those not in the ATD circles. How about a link in the first post of the award voting topic that leads here? Or maybe it's enough if someone just references this topic in some way there.

Okay, well I'm a long time (few years) lurker who is interested in the history of the game, and after finding out about the ATD through the HOH boards I've been following the draft/bios here to learn more. Perhaps even preparing to participate in the future :)

I have a spreadsheet - it's not perfect, but it's a good starting point. A few cautions:

1. I only have total voting points rather than the vote breakdown (i.e. it doesn't show number of first, second, third, etc place votes).

2. It hasn't been updated in a while - not sure if it has results before 2009, and if any historical results have been dug up over the past few years, it's probably not inclduded in the spreadsheet.

That being said, if anybody wants a copy, PM me, I'm sure it would be useful as a starting point (no sense in someone entering all the data from scratch).

Good to hear. The ATD is awesome, but, well...wear a helmet.
