Plane Carrying Lokomotiv Yaroslavl crashes; Former Devs Vasyunov and Rachunek dead

Reading more about it, they are saying 36 confirmed dead, only 1 survivor who is gravely injured. Awful.

How is this a humanity issue? Not like someone shot the plane down or flew it into the ground on purpose out of hate. Accidents happen.

The Associated Press is reporting 36 people have died in a plane crash near the city of Yaroslavl in Central Russia. The majority of victims are believed to be members of the Kontinental Hockey League club, Lokomotiv.

According to aviation officials, one passenger survived the crash, but is in critical condition.

According to the reports, the plane, a Yakovlev Yak-42 passenger jet, went down and caught fire shortly after taking to the air, crashing less than 2 kilometers from the airport.

The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said the crashed immediately after taking off from an airport near the city on the Volga River, which is approximately 150 miles northeast of Moscow.

The Yak-42, a 120-person capacity passenger jet, was on its way to the Belarusian capital Minsk and had 37 people on board, aviation authorities reported.

Locomotiv was scheduled to play Dynamo Minsk on Thursday, according to the KHL website.

The KHL season opened Wednesday with a game bewtween Ufa and Atalant. The gamje was stopped, and will not be restarted, once news of the tragedy broke.

Ilta-Sanomat reached Jaroslavl's FInnish goalie coach Jorma Valtonen who was not on flight. More to follow

I know it's early, I'm curious to who was on board. Were some of the players off for something else (injury, etc). I'm curious if it was just players or if Brad McCrimmon and staff were on board as well.

Saugus 09-07-2011 08:51 AM

I guess now all that remains is to find out which players were on the plane. I expect the Devils and the NHL will make some sort of statement.

Reporting McCrimmon was most likely on the plane. Other tweets are saying reports say that the one survivor was a crew member.

KHL also had a game going on now, the opening game of the season. Game has been halted.

I saw another report that only one player survived, Galimov.

Which means that Vasyunov and Rachunek are surely gone. :(
