Anyone wearing #66 this year?

Just curious. I hope so. The number isn't retired and I hope someone wears it so that everyone will be so completely consumed in it that they rupture an artery.

MLSE 09-12-2011 12:39 PM

Speaking of consumed in it.

Maravilla 09-12-2011 12:40 PM

Malkin should wear it

son of earl 09-12-2011 12:53 PM

JAGR he should wear it just to piss off the pens fans even more

Maravilla 09-12-2011 12:54 PM

Malkin: I'll wear it
Lemieux: No
Malkin: Trade Me

Oh, god. That'd be so hilarious.

SomeDude 09-12-2011 01:05 PM

I don't know if everyone would be consumed with it, but I know you seem like you already are.

The Kingslayer 09-12-2011 01:10 PM

There should only be one player to wear #66.

I think a prospect in either the traverse city tourney or the oilers young stars team is wearing it. U remember the commentators scoffing at it.

Trevor Gillies will change his number 6 times this year to 66 whenever the Pens play the Isles, then promptly change it back the next game.

Passchendaele 09-12-2011 01:35 PM

Maybe Austin Lemieux, wherever he is playing.

I support this :handclap:

Freudian 09-12-2011 01:47 PM

I would imagine the coaching staff would have the good judgment to not allow it if the player lacks it.

Nope.

He wears 96.

Why I know this? My roommates younger brother goes to school with Austin. (Pittsburgh Central Catholic)

Win.

Some kid in the Oilers prospect team wears 66. He took a stupid penalty late in last nights game

Guardian452 09-13-2011 12:56 PM

I doubt another player will ever where it in a regular season game. Most teams don't even use that number during training camp.

Brodie is wearing 7 now.

Personally I wish they let Gino Odjick keep #66 after his rookie year. It would have made a great "deal with it" gif.

I have a feeling the Flames heard from the league about Brody as the Canucks allegedly did in 91. It would make more sense back then though, when Mario was such a heavily marketed player. I don't see a move being made to retire #66 in the entire league though, that opens up a can of worms of retroactively honouring other players. Mario wore an uncommon number so it's not too tricky, but couldn't one argue if Mario deserves the honour, 4 and 9 should be retired too.

Sometimes wearing the number of an old icon is a tribute. If somebody wants to channel Super Mario when they play, I say let them.

I hate this thing that it would be some sort of hockey sin that someone would wear 66 (or 99 if that wasn't league wide retired). We always want the player with personality but don't want the cocky kid who thinks he's hot stuff or that he's even just honoring one of his hockey heroes but can't because its off limits for some reason. I don't get it. Basketball players wear Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson or Larry Bird's number. Its not a disrespect thing its a sign of respect. Better then the number fading away because no one wears it. Hell 99 isn't up in alot of arenas but you see someone wearing 99 and people will talk to the kids saying why he's wearing it.
