Defenceman comes into camp lighter after altering offseason training program

By DAVE STUBBS, The Gazette September 20, 2011
Tweet
Fifty-eight players in the Canadiens training camp are younger than defenceman Jaroslav Spacek.

That is, every other man on the roster.

But on Monday, an obviously lean and fit and eager Spacek stood in the team's Brossard dressing room positively beaming, in his best camp shape since he arrived with the team as a free agent in September 2009.

"I tried to drink water sometimes," Spacek said of his offseason fluid consumption, his familiar grin beginning to spread.

"Instead of.?" the playful question interrupted.

"Gatorade!" Czech beer isn't world renowned by accident, and clearly the 37-year-old native of Rokycany resisted a litre or two the past few months.

The training camp guide lists the 6-foot Spacek's weight at 207 pounds, but it would be no surprise if he was a half-dozen or more shy of that.

The mystery remains, because he wasn't offering the information.

"It's a secret, I can't tell you," he said, laughing. "I'm just happy with what I did."

Superb news! Always good to hear that. Sucks that Markov is still unable to play, but our D will do just fine at the beginning of the season. We'll definitely need Markov on the long run though. And I hope Spacek won't be the Spacegoat again this season.

Watch RDS! You can actually see the difference on his face. Not a tomato with a double-chin anymore!

Weip 09-20-2011 07:15 AM

Spacek was soft on all 3 goals scored by Dumont yesterday. This guy will never change, and I hope he will be our 7th-8th D.

It was only the training camp.

Seriously, nothing to worry about.

Gally11 09-20-2011 07:27 AM

Hopefully this transitions into him being a little less flat footed.. Spacek's problems came when he had to face the oppositions top lines last season I think we'll be content with his third pairing duties.

Stjonnypopo 09-20-2011 07:33 AM

I have faith in ol' Spatcho.

He's one of those guys who will best serve the team playing 15 minutes a night and contributing on the second PP wave. He's got a cannon but he's older and doesn't have the energy to play 25 minutes. If our defensive line-up stays healthy I think he's going to impress a lot of fans with his consistent play on the 2nd or 3rd line.

I have to say even before this article when they showed Spacek on RDS like another poster mentioned... the guys face doesn't look pudgy anymore. He'll always have that Spacek face but you know what I mean.

Price was soft in his first pre-season game last year, let's trade him!

nilan30 09-20-2011 08:14 AM

I guess entering the final year of a contract is reason enough to cut back on your number of chins.

Price is 24 y/o, he is still improving. Spacek was already our worst d-man last year. He is going on 38 y/o, final year contract, probably his last season in the NHL.

Still irrelevant, it was only the training camp.

BLNY 09-20-2011 08:49 AM

Round is a shape.:naughty::sarcasm:

kassian 09-20-2011 09:01 AM

He does seem to have lost a chin or two :3

WestIslander 09-20-2011 09:14 AM

Trust me guy's, I have seen him and he has lost at least 15 to 20 pounds.

Besides that...

I see the following opening day defense:

Gill - Gorges
Spacek - Subban
Weber - Yemelin
Diaz

When Markov is back:

Markov - Gorges
Gill - Subban
Spacek - Yemelin
Weber

We have no choice. Hamrlik is gone and Markov is still injured.
