News and Notes 2011-2012

1. I'm geared up for this year. I really didn't follow last season much and just read writeups from time to time. But this is obviously the put-up-or-shut up year: if they lose in the playoffs it won't be for choking.
2. Absolute best news of the offseason for Caps fans: Semin starting to speak English. More than anything his confidence has held him back all his career. I'll go out on a limb and say that Semin will lead the team in goals this year.
3. I've followed the Redskins too long to think that preseason means anything. The final preseason standings and final season standings are never anything alike.
4. I'm not a Kool-Aid drinker, except that one time in '07-'08...

Really? Better than the Vokoun signing or the Varlamov trade?

Those were more clever (Varlamov) or fortunate (Vokoun). This could be a turning point in his career. He's spent six years in the league and probably has/had the KHL in his mind post-Caps. If he's confident enough to conquer his biggest neurosis, he'll be confident enough to conquer a lot more.

Absolutely. If I had a nickel for every player who finally put it all together after his eighth pro season...

8th? He has 10 years of pro hockey under his belt. Sure only 6 of those have been in the NHL but why should that make a difference?

But then again the Sedins made big improvements after their 8th year of professional hockey, 4 of those in the NHL, and then again after 4 more NHL seasons so it isn't like it doesn't happen...

Eh, it was off the top of my head. And he probably could have played an extra season in the NHL, but that's another story.

Anyways, it's not completely unprecedented, which is good!

Prove me wrong Semin. Prove me wrong.

speaking of news and notes, anyone notice leonsis getting prime national press for poking obama with a stick?

i guess no obama at caps and wiz games this season. i had been thinking that the rumors of the caps hosting the 2013 WC was a perfect setup for a caps v chicago game.
maybe now....not so much

Maybe he will finally break that 40 goal plateau.

Or play 72 games!

Yeah I saw it - poor Teddy getting picked on for being a rich dude.

I wouldn't hold my breath on a Wash/Chicago game in 2013 - he still has to make it through an election. It might end up being Washington/Boston or Stars. :sarcasm:

Raikkonen 09-30-2011 08:02 AM

From Whyno's article about 4th line.

"Before anyone starts thinking the fourth-liners are too focused on offense and won’t be making life difficult for opposing players, Halpern is the steadying force. Beagle said the 35-year-old former Caps captain goes over strategies and ideas before the game and keeps his teammates on point."

actually, Obama is still POTUS on January 1 2013 regardless of the election. the only question is whether its part of his inaugural celebration or his farewell party.

Halpern, future Capitals coach/head coach

I would love that so much.
KONO Y U COACH IN COLORADO.

Langway 09-30-2011 11:13 AM

Caps media guide is out. (Large .pdf file.)

Wil Nichol joins the Caps as an amateur scout, former coach at DIII Wisconsin-Stevens Point and USHL Chicago Steel. Along with Richmond & Toews, the first three Chicago Steel head coaches are now part of the amateur scouting staff. Maybe a sign of moving further in the direction of drafting out of the NCAA/USA junior levels.

Mystlyfe 09-30-2011 12:10 PM

Bourque, Collins, and McNeill all cleared waivers.

Shame we probably won't get that feed up in here in Canada, apparently showing hours of top goaltenders of the 1990 playoffs is way more important than every actually showing games.

how are your lines shaping up for opening night...

Phoenix puts Viktor Tikhonov on waivers. Used to be an interesting prospect...not sure what the problem has been the last season or so.

Granted, I haven't seen a second of Sjogren, but I'm pretty sure I'd rather have Tikhonov.

And your reasoning for this is what exactly?
