BREAKING NEWS FROM STOCKHOLM: RANGERS WILL WAIVE SEAN AVERY, POST HAS LEARNED...

Fitzy 10-04-2011 09:37 AM

This is going to make some people really, really angry.

I'll confess to not being altogether pleased about it, either.

nyrleetch 10-04-2011 09:38 AM

Torts is a joke. It's that simple. The guy would rather have Christensen play due to his ego.

nevesis 10-04-2011 09:39 AM

Terrible move. Sean looked great all pre-season and came into camp in top shape. He was ready to have a great season. No one will claim him though...

Colt Seavers 10-04-2011 09:39 AM

Whoa! There seemed to be some speculation out there (B. McKenzie) ...but I'm still surprised.

NickyFotiu 10-04-2011 09:40 AM

I wonder if both players (Avery and EC) will be waived to see if either guy is claimed.

Weise will have to clear waivers as well.

Jabroni 10-04-2011 09:40 AM

Wow. I am shocked.

That's kind of a double-standard by Torts.

Earn your spot: Avery did. Christensen didn't.

TheGrapesOfMcIlrath 10-04-2011 09:41 AM

I'm not so much angry as I am dumbfounded. If this is for salary cap reasons, I can understand. However, EC should be waived too. He was one of our worst players in preseason. He was outplayed by half the Whale roster. Mitchell or Newbury deserve to be on the team over EC, and are cheaper, too.

n1cON 10-04-2011 09:41 AM

Donīt know what to think about it...

silverfish 10-04-2011 09:42 AM

If he was on the borderline, about to be waived...

THEN WHY THE **** DIDN'T YOU PLAY HIM SO HE COULD EARN HIS SPOT MORE THAN HE ALREADY HAD THIS PRESEASON

what the **** Torts...honestly

Yeah I get it "you know what Sean can do" :shakehead

A disgusting way to treat a player

Can anyone honestly say Christensen's play this pre-season earned him that spot?

If another NHL team thinks Avery is worth 1.9 mill a year in salary/cap hit then why wouldnt he be claimed on re entry waivers?

Fitzy 10-04-2011 09:44 AM

Christensen did have a sick goal earlier.

What it must have boiled down to is cap hits. Avery's is more of a hindrance than Christensen's.

Either that, or they kept EC in case the whole Richards-Gaborik thing doesn't work out.

Exactly.

Even if you think Avery didn't earn a spot, did Christensen either?

Torts doesn't pull the trigger on who gets waived/traded/signed... That's Glen Sather's job... This is a salary cap issue more than anything else...

TheGrapesOfMcIlrath 10-04-2011 09:46 AM

I'm not going to pin this all one Torts just yet.

If this was a salary cap move, I can live with it, but EC sure as hell better be getting waived too. There are better and cheaper options in Hartford with Mitchell and Newbury, both of whom outplayed EC and are on cheaper contracts.

If this is a Torts move, and has nothing to do with the cap, then I'll be enraged. Avery hands-down outplayed EC, and wasn't even given a chance to dress the final 2 games. Torts' responsibility is to ice the best roster within the cap, not play favorites.

wolfgaze 10-04-2011 09:46 AM

Die-hard Avery fans commence full scale meltdown. :)

That and Center depth too...

i think it is this - insurance to keep the only center that has ever shown any sort of chemistry with Gaborik

plus - and i hate to say it - shootouts

I'm sure it is, because there's no way Christensen earned a spot, at least not in my eyes.

Do I really have to answer that question?

It's Sean Avery...he is untradeable because of who he is first of all. Secondly, his cap hit is very high for WHAT he is.

Kovalev27 10-04-2011 09:48 AM

guess earning your spot was just talk from torts because you can't name 6 guys that had a better camp/preseason than avery on this roster. and then he wasn't even given a shot in the last 2 games.

this is 100% torts. total ego maniac. he just hurt this team. kept three soft one dimensional players in wolski ec and mza over a guy that gives you so many different things. total joke

Totally agree. I just don't get it. Martin Brodeur is smiling after hearing this...so I'm not.

Well what I'm getting at is that this is a business decision made by the General Manager, not the coach.... I know some will portray it as Tortorella waiving Avery but the reality is that this is a move by the GM.... It's not like Torts walks into Glen's office and says, "Well, EC made the team, place Sean on waivers...."

Pretty sure if Avery is put on re-entry waivers and claimed by another team, we are responsible for the 1.9 million and Dallas is completely off the hook.

This thread is going to be EPIC.

So much passion from a fan-base regarding a 4th line/13th forward.
