French-Canadians

Curious.......

When was the last team to have 4 French-Canadiens as starting centers in the NHL
like the Flyers will have on opening night? Though technically Sean was born in Phoenix, AZ and Claude in Ottawa, Ontario.

Did the Montreal Canadia(e)ns ever have 4 French-Canadien centerman at one
time in their long history????

When was the last time we had two Andreas' and two Braydens?

MiamiScreamingEagles 10-05-2011 08:04 PM

I could be mistaken but through some quick research: Ralph Backstrom played center throughout the 1960s.

Prior to that, Montreal in 1955-56 had Jean Beliveau, Jackie LeClair, Ken Mosdell and Henri Richard who were all born in Quebec.

I'm not sure if that assessment accurately answers your inquiry.

Giroux and Couturier are French Canadians even if they weren't born in Quebec. I personally can't recall any team having four centers of that ancestry before...

Flyers1974 10-05-2011 08:27 PM

If Ken Mosdell was not French then he is not French Canadien he may be considered Quebecque but not necessarily French Canadien.

Maybe a Montreal Canadien fan can answer this question.

In 1993 we had Vincent Damphousse, Stephan Lebeau, Guy Carbonneau and Jesse Bélanger at one point in the season, but Muller (and Skrudland before he was traded to Calgary) was also in the line-up.

However, Muller missed 4 games so there's a strong possibility that we had 4 French-Canadians centers that were born in the province of Quebec for some games.

BTW, we won the Cup that year... so you guys can plan the parade for this year, I guess ;)

I hate to split hairs but I can't help but point out that Coburn's first name is spelled Braydon

*canadians

Talbot isn't really a center - are we sure that's where he's going to play? I guess with Betts gone who else is going to do it?

I really liked him in the preseason. He is quick, smart, plays hard and is positionally very sound.

Claude was born in Hearst, Ontario...a predominantly French community in Northern Ontario. He moved to Ottawa when he was older

RoDu 10-05-2011 09:00 PM

You can be born and live in other provinces and be French Canadian, and be born in Quebec and not be French Canadian; for an example, be an anglophone as they call it

sobrien 10-05-2011 09:42 PM

This will all be ruined when Matt Read takes the first 4th line faceoff over Max Talbot

:sarcasm:

Hahaha never would have noticed that.

Not sure couturier can even speak french

Flyers1974 10-06-2011 08:26 AM

I wrote the same post on the Montreal Canadien site. Yet they took it off.
I did NOT think it was offensive. In fact I think it is great that we have 4 talented
centerman that happen to be French-Canadien. And I was just curious if
that has ever occurred in their history. I was not flaming, derogatory, or
inciting anything other than a curio of Montreal Canadien history. So Flyers moderators,
why would the moderators over there take it off and you guys did not?

I've no idea. Maybe they're a bit trigger happy with the season about to start, seeing trolls everywhere? Maybe they thought you were making a subtle dig at their new boy Betts, somehow?

Flyers mods are by far the coolest i have seen on HFboards in 4 years.
