How bad would it have to get this season...

For both JM & PG to be fired?

Are they just entrenched in their positions? Doesnt matter what happens? What is the likelyhood they would be removed during a season??

Mike8 10-06-2011 01:07 PM

I don't think it's very likely at all. Less so for Gauthier than Martin even.

pine* 10-06-2011 01:07 PM

if we get Nail

cjbhab* 10-06-2011 01:09 PM

really? we're calling for JM and PG's head before the season already..

Let's see a little optimism..

JM has been to 4 playoff rounds in the last 2 years which is probably exceeding expectations.. I'm not sure why we need to doubt him at this point.. which is what this thread is doing whether it's your intention or not.

How good does it need to get this season to give PG and JM 3 year contract extensions? What is the likely-hood we can entrench them in their positions?

One Trick Pony 10-06-2011 01:14 PM

This is hilarious. First you complain about having Spacek in our line up over a guy that has never played an NHL game yet in another post and then you write this. Holy overreaction batman.

groovejuice 10-06-2011 01:17 PM

I see serious injuries (read Price, PK, Cammy) as the most likely reason the habs underperform. In this case, jobs will be safe.

Andy 10-06-2011 01:17 PM

Why even care?

I used to be on this fire Martin bandwagon, but the last two playoff years have sold me. He won't get fired unless the Habs finish in lottery pick territory.

Kriss E 10-06-2011 01:32 PM

Martin and Gauthier have done good things with this team, there's no reason for them to be fired.

RaMMuT 10-06-2011 01:33 PM

I dont think either will be fired anytime soon.

Maybe if we dont make the playoffs 2 years in a row then okay, but until then...

JM system ftw

TheWhiteIdea 10-06-2011 01:33 PM

So if this team starts out like 2-13 w/o Price going down, Martin is completely safe??

Completely safe doesn't exist in the NHL. I don't see the point in this hypothetical, though. If Montreal goes 0-41, there'll be changes, sure.

JLP 10-06-2011 02:28 PM

Reasonable question. The average tenure for an NHL coach is 2.3 years and Martin's starting his third season.

IMO as I wrote elsewhere the question is can we score enough goals. Fans will accept a defensive system if it delivers wins. But if the Habs are below .500 at XMAS while guys like Ribeiro, Grabovski, S Kostitsyn, Latendresse and yes even Pouliot are putting up better offensive numbers than many/most of our guys, the city will call for an overhaul of the Habs' system and culture and PG and Martin will be under fire for sure. But my hope is we win the cup and JM gets the JA. :D

Miller Time 10-06-2011 02:40 PM

never say never, but I think it's safe to say that there is almost no chance that either loses their job this season.

the only way this team completely implodes (finishing with a lottery pick), is if there is a rash of serious injuries, and in that case it would be unlikely to see PG scapegoating Martin for that, or for Molson to pull the plug on PG.

if the team struggles badly and misses the playoffs, then I do think there would be potential changes made in the offseason, but in-season... not likely

Teufelsdreck 10-06-2011 03:10 PM

I think people are jumping to conclusions based on their prejudices and actually want the Habs to s(t)ink. Jacques Martin has a history of seeing to it that his teams make the playoffs rather than settle for a top 10 draft pick. He's the only coach in many years to shepherd the Habs to the ECF. If the outlook looks uncertain because players underperform or are injured, Gauthier will make trades to put the Habs back in the race. Does that disappoint you doubters?

All-Star 10-06-2011 03:22 PM

JM could lose the dressing room and get canned; it's what happened to Carbo (1st in the east in April, to 2nd in the east the following Christmas, to canned in February), but there is no way Goat's going anywhere.

Hopefully it doesn't take much and the Markov contract is the start for PG.

HH 10-06-2011 03:42 PM

If the Habs go 0-82 I say 100% chance.

Some serious external factors would have to impact the team for that scenario to happen, so Goat might still be safe (the team he's assembled is still a good team in theory). I do agree that Martin would be gone though. Firing the coach is usually one of the first things GMs fall back on to try and right a sinking ship.

Et le But 10-06-2011 04:01 PM

If the team misses the playoffs and it's not by like 1 point or something, and there's no epic injury crisis to excuse it, I could see Martin losing his job.

I can't see any scenario where Gauthier is fired during or after this season.

1 down, 81 to go.

Honestly let this team start like 0-14 if it rids the Habs of JM for sure & PG too would be nice.

Yeah, any real fans would LOVE to see their team losing games one after another... :help:

Stjonnypopo 10-07-2011 12:34 PM

Did Martin sign a 3 or 4 year contract?

Sure he brought the team into the playoffs every year, well the past two years, but I don't think he's the type of coach I want re-signed. If he only signed 2 years I could see PG re-signing him at the end of this season. If he signed for 4 years originally I think he would be done after next year, assuming he doesn't get canned.

Stradale 10-07-2011 12:37 PM

I'm far from being a fan of Martin but this is hilarious, after 1 loss and there's already a fire Martin thread.
