Workout Frequency

I'm not a hockey player nor do I train as one but i figured this is a good place to post this. Why do they say you shouldn't work out the same muscle group on consecutive days? And does that still apply to a person like me who has a fairly quick recovery time and isnt limited by pain the next day?
