I think the trading of Leetch has to be the writing on the wall for Mark. Sather doesn't seem to have it in him to "retire" Mess, so this is his not so subtle hint to ride off into the sunset.
Having said that, in another horrible season at MSG, few things are better than a Messier goal at the Garden. 1,851 was the high point of the season. On the other hand, it's hard to watch an icon slowly skate around the ice knowing that the end is near. Announce your retirement Mark and give us fans a chance to say goodbye on 3/31.
It's time for a new direction.
