i think you're missing the concept of a *contender*.. atleast how i have always understood it. anaheim was nothing more than a sleeper, while new jersey was the contender. contenders are based on consistent success in the playoffs, as well as expectations pertaining to that consistent success. that is what seperates a perennial *contender* like jersey or detroit from teams like carolina and anaheim

if anaheim had won, they still weren't a contender. imo you can't call a team a contender after the fact, only going into the playoffs..
