But in all honesty, who wants to join a beer league for a few hundred $$$ to be a 'grinder' or 'defensive specialist'? I'm not on a team that's fighting for the Allen Cup or competing for a provincial AAA crown.
I'm a 33 year old father of 2 that wants to get out and believe he's Steve Yzerman for a night.

In last years playoffs the mantra of my line was "don't get scored on". I can't tell you how boring it was. We simply worked hard in our zone and then got it out and changed it up. On almost every occasion if I did try to make something happen in the offensive zone, my linemates weren't there because they were hanging back or changing up after a 25 second shift. Maybe I "don't get it" but I'm not built like that. I want to have FUN and it seems that a lot of guys I've played with over the years don't get that. They still see hockey, in any form, to be the most serious thing on the planet; "WIN, WIN, WIN. Don't try anything fancy. Dump the puck in. Backcheck, etc, etc, etc."

If the only thing I can do in a league is be a 3rd line plugger that only has worth in giving the top 2 lines a rest while providing semi-decent defense then I don't want to play.
Tonight is pretty much going to be my last game.
I got invited into a weekly pick-up game that I know I can have fun with so that's what I'm going to do.
I'll leave this league to all those former junior players so they can have fun not having fun.

And I know I'm not the only one that feels that way in this league as I've talked to about a half-dozen other guys that expressed the same concerns. Over the course of 2 years, the league has turned into a retirement league for 22-25 year old kids that just finished their ultra-competitive Junior C or B careers. I have no problem with that. I'm just glad I realized my limitations before I wasted any more time in the league.
