Started at 31, for how long I'll be improving?

I'm 32, and have been practicing/playing "real" hockey for about a year. The thing that I like the most about it is learning and getting better. However, I've been told that I can expect my growth to last for no more 2-3 years. After which I'll be at my lifetime plateau as a player.

How true is that?

If it helps, I don't play in a league to save time for practices, which I have three in a week + one self-practice doing skating excercises during public skating.
