The best approach in the past few years has been proven... Patience is the best approach. Championship teams are built over 3-5 years... and rushing it spoils the future as key pieces are lost/dealt... Needless to say, the future got A LOT brighter for this franchise after the deadline... And it's safe to say this team will be in a good position to take over the NY area as the best franchise around there (esp. when NJ sinks... which IMO is going to happen in the next couple of years)

I totally agree with your first point - but remember - the system was pretty bare of prospects when Sather did take over. That said, he fell right into the trap.
I wouldn't be so sure of NJ sinking.... They draft very well and develop those picks nicely with a strong system in Albany.
