If +/- were a useless stat why would anyone bother keeping it? I'll grant that it doesn't mean all that much when comparing player A with player B when they are on different teams. But for players on the same team +/- is a very meaningful stat, especially when judging defensemen.
Also saying that just because Draper and Maltby kill penalties is why their +/- is higher is misguided. They still have to score while shorthanded to get a plus, just getting time on the PK unit doesn't mean squat. Obviously this is more difficult than a 5 x 5 goal so a plus is well deserved. Also if they weren't good defensively they wouldn't have the opportunity to PK in the first place. Why doesn't Fischer get time on the PK? Don't you think if he were playing well he'd get the chance? Could Fischer be watching from the bench because Lewis actually wants to kill the penalties?
Here’s a thought: If PK time is good for a player's +/- then powerplay time must be bad for it, right? Every time Lidstrom or Schneider is on the PP and they give up a short handed goal they get a minus. This hurts their +/- relative to Fischer's since he seldom gets PP time. Doesn't this make their +17 and +20 that much more impressive than Fischer's poor rating?
I don't care how you try to spin it, the fact is Fischer is the weakest defenseman on the team right now. He's a 5 or 6 at best. You can tell from watching the games or looking up the team stats in the paper. Both tell the story. He's taken a major step backward and I don't think anyone can say it's all the injury at this point. We just don't know.
