I checked the archives of the local paper and it seems clear the Preds were much more excited about Kevin Klein.
Fenton compared the 6-foot-1, 187-pound Klein, who totaled 44 points in 67 games for Toronto St. Michael's of the Ontario Hockey League, favorably to first-round selection Suter.
''For [Klein] to still be there when we picked, we were thrilled,'' Fenton said. ''He was one of our top-rated defensemen. We've talked about Suter and Klein being a defensive pairing for us down the road when we're competing for the Stanley Cup.
''They've got mobility, passing ability, good hockey sense and great character.''
For Weber, size mattered it seems. They did trade his Rockets teammate Thomas Slovak to "make room for him".
In selecting the 6-3, 190-pound Weber and the 6-4, 245-pound Stehlik with their next two choices, the Predators added some beef, which they don't have an overabundance of in the organization.
''Those picks were in part based on our needs to get bigger and stronger,'' Predators General Manager David Poile said. ''They were two of the biggest defensemen taken in the draft.''
I think he really exploded the following year.
