I don't think it's unfair to judge Mess mainly (but not entirely) on points scored. At his core, he was an offensive player. We talk him up as being complete, but really, he was on the ice for one reason, and that was to score goals. You can argue that players like Howe and Orr were greater because of their all-around impact, but I don't see that with Mess. Teams worried about Mess scoring, they didn't worry about Mess shutting them down in the other end of the rink.
