I don't know about all of the coulda's and woulda's in this debate, there's really no point in discussing what if's because we'll never know. (Although I will note that I don't think that even the most ardent Messier supporter would contend that he could have won a Cup in LA had he gone instead of Gretzky.)

All we know is what these players did. Mess and Gretz were great in their own ways, we were lucky to get to see them play for the Rangers, it's too bad that the '97 run fell short.

They made an incredible 1-2 punch in Edmonton. We've seen some pretty incredible ones since Lemieux-Francis, Yzerman-Fedorov, Sakic-Forsberg, but I don't think any of those match up to Gretzky-Messier.
