---The difference being that Gretzky made the guys on the ice better every time he went out there over his long career, whereas Messier only made the entire team better on certain occassions. Remember, folks, 1994 was one season. We saw little evidence of Messier's leadership and influence during the Rangers half-hearted attempt to defend their cup in '95. In fact, we saw little evidence of this ability at any point in his career after 1994.
