MKD, I love ya...I really do.
But buddy, we have some serious differences in what we EXPECT from this franchise!
I hear ya when you say all of the lovey dovey stuff about making the playoffs on a regular basis. It really IS something that we can brag about to our friends who are fans of other teams....except when it comes to Cup Finals time...or, 2nd round time for that matter.
I dont judge success based on how often we make the postseason. I want CUP WINS!
You are most certainly correct when you say that only 1 team can win it in a given year. I wont and cant argue that fact.
However, success to me IS judged by who gets their name engraved on that trophy. If your name is not on it, then you are just one of 29 other losers who play in the NHL.
These guys are not high school athletes who are playing a sport for free at which they are passionate and do it primarily out of love for their sport. They are multimillionaire athletes who are paid top dollar to WIN. Well, maybe thats not the expectation here. Maybe ownership is happy getting those few extra gates from home playoff dates. And maybe the fans truly are simply tickled pink that we made the dance again.
But somehow, I cant get at all excited about being 1 of 16 teams to make the playoffs. Hell, if you fail to make the postseason you are AWFUL! Over half the NHL qualifies for postseason play each spring. Unless you are befallen with total managment uneptitude (which BTW is why we are blessed with the likes of Sammy and Thornton) you have all but TRY to miss the NHL`s postseason.
I am sorry...actually thats a lie, that I hold HIGH STANDARDS from this great organization. But thats exactly what I do. I have to believe that part of the reason for our mediocrity over the years (BTW, you call it consistency, I call it mediocrity) is that the fans themselves have grown complacent and accepting of a lower standard of success.
The fans have grown happy and content with 4-7 extra games a year. No longer do the fans DEMAND excellence. No longer do they demand a Cup...heck, we dont even demand a single round victory. I have read time and time again how fans will be happy if we just "try wicked hahhhd" this spring, even if we dont get out of round one.
Figuratively speaking, I`d rather be dead than accept a 1st or 2nd round bow out REGARDLESS of how well our "boys" play and regardless of how "hard" they tried.
At some point, effort is NOT enough and RESULTS have to be your evaluation tool.
For too long I satisfied myself with the joy of a win ove the hated Canadiens. I suffered through too many losses to care about much other than whipping the boys from Montreal.
But today, I DEMAND a victory over the Canadiens....nothing less is good enough! Losing to them will be an abject failure!
I dont care if Theo pitches 4 shut 1-0 wins...but we try "wicked hahhhd". It wont be good enough!
I dont care if we lose in 7 hard fought 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 games....it wont b enough!
I will be pleasently pleased that Bergeron and Razor emerged....but upset that they didnt do ENOUGH in the playoffs....
That Thornton could elevate his game to the level that was needed...
That Rolston, Murray, Knuble et al didnt get the key goal when we needed it.
I am tired of accepting an invitation to a week and a half long dance with Montreal.
I wont accept anything less than playing into June.
To me, if you accept that, you dont have expectations...and things will NEVER changea around here.
