The best piece of advice I can give you is: skate.

What do I mean by that? I mean, before you ever bring a stick or puck to the rink, I would get very comfortable with 4 skating variables
1) Explosive skating (skating in a hockey stance, not standing upright)
2) Skating Backwards/Transitioning (skating backwards is a technique, but so is transitioning from forward to back. If your skating faster forward and you transition, skating backwards is easier as well)
3)Stopping (Get really good at one side before you play--the other side will come when playing)
4) Crossovers (Turning is important in hockey, and feeling comfortable crossing your legs over both forwards and backwards will help you skate much more efficently and faster.)

Have fun!
