There's no questioning Gilmour's intensity and experience, but there was also a lot of talk about him being a divisive force in the dressing room. He was obtained as a replacement for Koivu during his bout with cancer. Now that Koivu is back and healthy he will provide the leadership necessary. ALso, Gilmour's lack of discipline cost the Habs dearly against the Canes that year.
