I would really really want to have Shanny back next season, but the others are right, it would have to be with a pay cut. He may not want to go for that, but with our younger core players at or near the end of their contracts, it's the way it'll have to be.
The same goes for Straka, who I actually want back even more. He and Jagr will likely have a great deal of influence on each other next season vis-a-vis coming back for another go.
I like all three of our eldest players (Shanahan, Jagr, Straka) and wish they could play with us the way they are playing now for years to come, but it just simply doesn't work out that way. I believe this the last year you will see all 3 on the team at once, let alone if any return. Jagr needs to trigger to stay and then I wouldn't mind, Straka and Shanahan too, but I doubt they return.
Shanahan is approaching 40 and while he's still a good player, he's probably going to look out more for the sake of his family after this year, cup or not, I think he'd rather be with his kids than trying to pull it off as a old-timer in the NHL. I can't see him taking a pay cut either, not that he's not a nice and respectable guy or anything, but I just can't see that happening..
Next year and the year after that will be time for the younger players to step up, or, if by some stroke of luck, we grab someone like AO(
