Having said that, however, I begrudgingly admit that if you look at the 2001 draft, it produced some good players. Out of that draft, the Rangers emerged w/ Blackburn, Tyutin, Murray, and Zidlicky. Granted Zidlicky is not here, but he is in the NHL and making an impact. To come out of a draft w/ 4 players who are either in the NHL or will be next year is not that bad.
As a GM, Sather didnīt ( and doesnīt ) choose the individual players during the draft. He only set(s) the priorities ( size, speed etc... ), it was Maloneys responsibility to see that these priorities are reflected in the individual selections ( and the "lists"/"sketches" the teams make before the draft ). Itīs no secret that Sather likes big guys s
As for the whole Farleadau (F. ) fiasco, I have a strange feeling that some scout new to the buisness ( or to the org. at least , or to ice-hockey for that matter) wanted to make a quick nice impression by thinking that F.would become something more than he is today and as a result heīd get the credit for suggesting the org. to make such a "steal" in the second round . The kid ( F. ) did meet the requirements that Sather had made, so I quess that is why Maloney ok-d it. I still wonder why this selections was done without more behind the scenes work and thought put into it. HF has a article/update on F. at
so youīre welcome to read that and contemplate what in the good name of Zeus really did go on.
The Sather quote in the article about F. : "Sather likened him to former Ranger nemesis Joel Otto.." , makes me seriously wonder that something must be seriously wrong with the way the Rangers run their draft because you donīt draft potential ( emphasis on the word "potential" here ) Joel Ottos with the 33rd pick in any draft, regardless of whether the dradt is regarded to be "weak" or "strong".
Just my two cents,
