Longer sticks obviously allow for better puck protection as well.

They allow you to keep the puck further away from your body, so if you use your body to protect the puck often it will help that aspect of the game. This is of course assuming you use distance to protect the puck rather than stickhandling/keeping it in your skates.

The difference in stickhandling is pretty substantial IMO. Its a completely different feel.
