Gainey's situation in Dallas was a little bit different than the situation he has now. In Dallas he had an owner who was looking to win today, not wait a few years until the young players mature.

Sometimes a GM has to build with what's available & while he may want a Peter Forsberg, that player may not be available for a number of reasons. In that case you take what is available as long as you think they can contribute to the team. Both players have had success in the NHL at various times in their career. Signing or trading for veteran players can be almost as risky as drafting 18 year olds, sometimes it works & sometimes not.

Some people seem to think that in building a team you just decide which players you want & go get them. Wouldn't that be a nice job!
