If you're now gunning for the play-offs in honest, then that changes things rather substantially because then I cannot see you dealing Erat when you're lacking scorers already. Then - maybe you'd rather look to dealing Suter instead in order to boost your fire-power? After all - from what I can read elsewhere you do not expect to be able to sign all your RFA's, so logic says there's a limit to the salary you can take back too.
Personally I do think Staal is pretty far off calue wise, what with him getting 29 goals and leading the NHL in shorties as an 18 year old 2nd overall pick. Erat hasn't shown anyway near that potential and Klein you never play. But I also realise that the financial situation I am banking on to make a trade possible is not enough to make this free, as they're both good players .
So, if I go along with the initial stand of this topic - ie. you're selling rather than buying - then I'd say your pick of Colby Armstrong (who is signed through next season) or Erik Christensen plus a quality prospect (we could talk Esposito) plus a 2nd/3rd draftpick.
Again - if financial constraints are not an issue forcing you to think in that kind of asset management... this is pretty much moot to begin with. If you're gunning for a shot at a play-off run, you have no reason to go for any of this. I was just wondering where you stood .

Poile has stated repeatedly that he can and will sign all RFA's. He hadn't mentioned signing Dumont so that was a surprise but I don't think it changes plans. I don't think the Preds are in fire sale mode from financial constraints at all and I think most Pred fans and, more importantly, Poile would say the team has a very solid chance of getting into the playoffs this year. Combine that with the shortage of 1 top six forward and I think there is little to no chance that Erat is moved. On defense, the Preds could move some talent and justify it. On offense, it looks like we are giving up and I dont think they can/will go that path.
Thus, any trades almost certainly involve defense and will have the appearance of helping immediately in a push for the playoffs. Candidates for trade most likely would include: Zids, Suter, Klein and Koistenen.
In terms of value, Erat and Klien for Staal is short but not by a huge amount. If the Pens decide the team could ditch a super talented guy to upgrade elsewhere, then I would think defense would be more of a priority. I would think Staal for Suter might be more in keeping with the needs of the teams.
