Well, it goes back a long way.

Les Habitants was the way french canadians were called in the early part of the 20th century, mostly because they came from uneducated, farmlands families. It's not always viewed as a compliment. In fact, in the late 20th century, being called a Habitant meant that you were a sort of redneck. Just like "un colon".

Some still believe the H in the logo meants Habitants. But it's a myth. It's Club de hockey Canadien (with no S at the end, because that's how the club is named).
