I think it's just gonna take time for him to figure out what type of training is going to work, and what won't work for his back. Doesn't sound like there is any structural damage, just that some muscles aren't holding up as well and others are overworking to correct it - thus, the spasms. If he can find a way to keep his back strong throughout a season (he may never be able to) then he could play for years to come. At this point though, it would be wise for him to control his desires and realize that it is a possibility that he won't be able to play again.
