I think it's also unfair to get on top of Rockström for Lindbom, Mertzig, or Ronnie Sundin. Lindbom was a 7th rounder, and the other two were 9th rounders. It's pretty good that those players actually made it to the NHL at all.
The greatest thing about Rockström is that he
pull great players late in the draft (though personally I'd like to see him draft one or two more Finns
). Check this story on Kim Johnsson, which I took from an old TSN story:
"At the time," Smith said, "I was thinking about where we were going afterward for the prospect party. We were more worried wondering whether everybody had picked up their pens and books before we left."
Smith chose Johnsson, in part at least, because he found Johnsson's first name, Kim, short for Kimmo, interesting.
"At the time," Smith said, "he was a non-descript European player in Sweden, but Christer saw something he liked about him."
