a few general observations after a good win;
...geoff sanderson.. was a -3 for the oil last night.. in only 1:25 icetime. has to be close to a record.
...koistinen with two superior offensive plays. the chip around their defenseman to spring dumont on the first goal, and the great driving slapshot down the slot.
...legwand with only the one point. but his net presence is what made goal 2 (the first erat one), and goal 4 (the erat hatrtick one) both happen.
...several of the good scoring chances we gave up in the first period were from lost faceoffs in the defensive zone by arnott. (only 6 for 18 in the faceoff circle).
...a very nicely played third period defensively for us, after being a little sloppy defensively in the first two periods. really controlled them in the third to prevent any miracle comeback. (only 7 shots allowed). can tell that much of the looseness in the first two periods was from our forwards, because we only took 5 shots oursleves in the third when we started thinking defense and magically the oil couldn't generate anything offensively (because our forwards were now playing defense).
...the powerplay didn't really get anything going on the two attempts last night. of course we only had two attempts. the pk looked sharp however. nichol continues to especially play well on the pk, hlavac, legwand and fiddler also out front.
...dumont with two other 'almost' goals. really no good chances for rads (0 shots), who tried to stickhandle too much on his own.
...kept hoping for an all time first for the preds with erat. would have been great to see him score our first 4 goal game ever. when he had three so early, you knew he had a chance.
...really unusual stat that this was only our 2nd ever road hat-trick. 14 in a row at home.
...10 shots from our defensemen. 3 shots from the arnott line. 4 shots form the legwand line. 3 shots from nichol's line. 4 shots from the bonk line (hordy with three of those). lot of balance there.
...great little lookoff and then pass from fiddler on the koistinen one timer.
...eillis is tracking the first shot so well. equally important is that he's rarely giving up soft goals. lots of good stops thru traffic on shots from the point last night.
...zids and koistinen both +4's on the night. koistinen had three shots blocked out on the point on our two pp's that could have hurt, but he played a mighty fine game.
...great point shot by weber to generate the erat rebound goal. low, hard and on the ice thru traffic.
... suter shows his speed and puckhandling ability about once a game breaking into the opponents zone down the left halfboard. last night this is what set up the weber shot that led to the erat rebound.
...tootoo with a golden chance on the mini-breakaway that he shot way wide. could see dumont consoling him on the bench afterwards.
...funny to hear what the oil coaches in game were saying. kept bragging on how well we could shoot the puck and how dangerous we are offensively. and how well our defensemen could move the puck. and how everything seemed to go our way (lol).
always fun to think back on a nice win.
