It's not about hockey really. The same thing in every sport. One reason for it could be that it's not considered cool to just score. The goal must be flashy as well (back-heel or with the wrong end of your stick etc. ) Remember what it was like when you grew up? Whenever a player had an open goal he tried to do something special instead of just putting the puck/ball in the net. This applies to practise session only of course but obviously it means that players aren't properly prepared when they play matches.
