If there is a season next year, I believe we will only see minor changes to START the season.
That might mean something like Hossa (who I think is out of options) replacing Dagenais on the second line, Plekanec moving in as the 3rd line center with Dowd (I would re-sign him) moving to the fourth. I would definitely offer Kovalev a contract and would be tempted to offer Sundstrom a contract as well. Perreault would be a big maybe, depending on the salary he would be willing to accept and the role he would be willing to fill (part time player).
On defense, it could mean Beauchemin (also out of options) could stick as the 7th man in place of Quintal. Hainsey wouldn't be kept as a 7th so he would have to beat out Bouillon for the 3rd spot on the left side.
A third line of Bulis-Plekanec-Ward would provide lots of hustle and grit. All three are capable penalty killers. To me, Plekanec's abilities look ideally suited to a 3rd line center in the NHL.
A fourth line of Begin-Dowd-Sundstrom would be a good shut down line, again with lots of hustle. Begin also provides extra depth at center.
That would leave Langdon and Perreault as role players, depending on what the specific needs might be.
On the hot seat would be Ribeiro and Hossa. Both would have to prove they are up to 2nd line abilities. If not, Perezhogin and Higgins would be waiting in the minors.
That would mean only 3 or 4 new faces: Hossa, Plekanec, Beauchemin and Hainsey.
Departures would include Dagenais, Juneau, Dackell, Quintal and maybe Bouillon.
I did say that this is how the season could START. Gainey will have a much better handle on the talent in the organization and around the league. Those that fail to meet expectations could be gone by Christmas.
Depending on free agent or trade opportunities, I believe a big number two center would be high on our list and maybe a physically dominating defenseman. But since these kinds of players are on everyone's list, it could be difficult to fill those holes.
