I think it ultimately comes down to one word - respect...and that is something that everybody wants.
If you have respect for the other player on the ice, regardless of gender,weight, size, ability etc, you will treat them fairly.
When you step on the ice, you should only have to think about one thing and thats playing hockey. Trying to figure out whether a person is a girl or boy is ridiculous.
To me, just because you refuse to check a girl on the basis of her gender does not mean you respect her. To the contrary, it shows disrespect to her as a player.
