It's not so double-edged. If some team makes an extravagant offer for Halak as an RFA, Gainey would have the option of matching it or taking compensation in the form of first round picks. Should Gainey pay Halak more than he's giving Price? He didn't want to pay $3M to keep Huet as a backup, so why would he give that much to Halak?
