If Washington loses just ONE game in regulation, it takes only ONE victory by Boston or Philly or Ottawa (an OT or SO loss in their case) or New York for one of those teams to be sure to finish ahead of Washington.

Now that's just for the 8th spot... for the 7th spot, the Caps would have to be perfect and two of those four teams would have to lose twice.

Fair enough, but my point was they need to beat two teams that are mathematically eliminated, which is "the most likely outcome" of those games. And the counter arguments about the division rely on them beating Carolina.

Anyway, you're right, it's all a crapshoot, but I think it more likely Washington make the playoffs as a 7-8 seed than as a 3 seed. Which means, there is a semi-decent chance we play them, should they make it.
