I'm as certain as outsider can be that Gainey consulted with Carbonneau and Melanson, it only makes sense. Whether any of them had a definitive point of view on the trade or whether a consensus was formed is something we'll never know.

It seems reasonable to me that with an entrenched number 1a net minder (one who was/is set to become a UFA) and a potential franchise 1b waiting patiently in the wings (one who perhaps needed a push) the deal was consummated. The real bone of contention around here appears to be the return or alternatively the risk vs. the return (the former is debatable the latter not so much).
