This year, he was the main reason why we were in the playoff when nobody was expecting it. He has a point per game average and played 94 straights games and thats playing being the opponents target night after night. But because he was not as good as in the regular season in the playoff, people wants him out already?
People have more invested in Koivu if that makes sense. He has been a life long hab and the Captain. Koivu also despite injuries and average season, I personally have more faith he will continue to put up at his usual totals.
Kovalev is still an enigma. He is a bit older than Koivu and quite a bit more unpredictable. Kovalev can just as easily shut it down if he chooses as he has done in the past on more than one occasion.
I would believe its Koivu's choice if he wants to stay and I think management will see what Kovalev does next year. I can't think they are 100% confident he won't regress into last years state.
