Let's assume Ryder, Brisebois, Smolinski, Grabovski & Dandenault are gone.

Let's assume Mark Streit and all of the rest of the RFAs are re-signed.

Let's assume we don't acquire any new UFAs.

Let's assume the Habs invest in Andrei Kostitsyn as the eventual replacement for Alexei Kovalev as the "most talented" guy.

Let's assume Guillaume Latendresse improves his skating 5-10%.

Let's assume the new guys making the team are Kyle Chipchura, Pavel Valentenko, Max Pacioretti and Greg Stewart. Since we ended this year with 24, one over the limit, we'll start 08-09 with 23 players.

Let's assume Carbonneau wants a 3rd line with a bit of scoring punch as well as defensive awareness.

Given the above, I think the Habs would want to split up AKost and Kovalev, and put Chipchura with speedy two-way wingers (much like Doug Jarvis had Bob Gainey by his side).

Plekanec-Kovalev-Latendresse
Koivu-AKost-Pacioretti
Chipchura-SKost-Higgins
Lapierre-Streit-Begin
...Stewart, Kostopoulos

Komisarek-Markov
O'Byrne-Hamrlik
Gorges-Bouillon
...Valentenko

Price
Halak

This lineup has lots of spare cap space in it. Therefore, there is room for one or two UFAs to come in and upgrade the team further, hopefully some right-hand shots.
