I think this is just a reality of the cap world. Teams will try to lock good young players long term at a higher rate than in the past. It makes all sorts of sense to somewhat overpay the 25 year old player with a strong possibility that he will outplay his contract in the not so distant future. The alternative is to overpay a 32-33 year old UFA (Ryan Smyth, Nylander, Jovanovski et all) with a strong possibility that they will never live up to the expectations and a couple years down the road you will be stuck with an albatross of a contract and a marginal NHL player.
