Actually, a labral tear like the one Esche had is usually degenerative, which means he may have had a little bit of pain at first, sometimes off and on, and it got progressively (maybe slowly) worse until it finally tore. I think the actual tear may have happened during the Toronto series game 5 in which he was pulled after the first period had ended.
