Right there you have two ways to dump salary without taking salary back. Oilers could package a pick or prospect with a player to dump salary. If it costs a 2nd round pick (as was the case with the Gauthier salary dump) to make room for Hossa, that's not a heavy price to pay. Oilers could send a player or two (other than Roloson, who would count against the cap regardless) to the minors. The Oilers have a pile of guys on entry-level/low salary deals who would be available to slot into 4th line/bottom pairing/pressbox duty. They could also run with a 21 or 22-man roster to save up to 1+ M$ in cap space.
I wouldn't say all of these ideas are all necessarily ideal team-building, but this is far from "financially impossible" stuff.
