Is Havlat going to be a product of an offensively potent organization that can score goals in bunches, and Smyth a product of a depleted team? Not really a fair comparison, considering that they both bring varying things to the table. Havlat brings offense, whereas Smyth brings energy, leadership and grit to the top-six forward position.
This would be like comparing Hossa to Doan. While Doan has the capability to score on a productive basis, Marian Hossa will out produce him, simply because he has the raw talent to do so, and the abundance of skill around him. Doan on the other hand brings a different facet of play to the game that Hossa doesn’t have in his possession.
Smyth would help Ottawa more in the playoffs then Havlat would. Simply because Havlat is caught behind two other right wingers that won't be moved for his sake, and because Havlat does not have the tangibles that Ottawa lacks in their top-six rotation: a physical winger that can create space for his line mates and drive to the net to score the ugly, typical playoff goal.
This isn’t to say that Havlat is not a gifted player, he’s just repetition in the Ottawa organization.
