In 2006-07 when the Sabres lost to Ottawa, he played through a sports hernia late in the season and in the playoffs. The knock on Kalinin is that he is a fragile ego who can be very inconsistent. If you Google him, you will find stories where he was the best player on the ice in one game and a disaster in the next.
There also seems to be an undercurrent of him frustrating Lindy Ruff. Coaching and good health could be the keys in getting a lot out of him.
If he plays like he did in the 2005-06 playoffs then he's a steal. Hopefully, a late bloomer, much like Rozsival.
Renney and Ruff have very different approaches. Renney is not one to call a player out in public. Renney might be a coach more suited for a player like Kalinin.
