If the same rules that existed back then were around today, the Canadiens would automatically have had first rights on Lecavalier and St Louis if they wanted them.
They'd probably look pretty nice in a Habs jersey too.
Actually, that's a myth that probably deserves a sticky or a FAQ or something. There was a discussion a month or so back about it in here or in the B's forum, so if you're interested enough, you can probably look it up.
Anyway, while we could hope that a Lecavalier or St.Louis born in the 40's might be partial to signing up for the Habs, there is no guarantee that they would have. Maybe they would have chosen to go play for the Guelph Biltmores (Rod Gilbert, Jean Ratelle), or Niagara Falls Flyers or into any of the development systems of any of the other Original 6 teams. The Habs didn't have any exclusive rights.
But then, any team in the NHL could have had Martin St.Louis, even under the modern system, so we're not alone in that one.
