All very valid points.

The biggest thing is that they couldn't put a fast food place every 20 blocks if there wasn't a market for it.

And that market comes from people who just arent home to cook. I mean to add to this dilemma we need to look at what people have in the fridges at home also. I mean millions of people buy the white castle hamburgers or bagel bites or other instant junk food because they simply don't have the time to cook. Another problem {and one that affected me in college} is that when you eat at 10 or 11 at night, you're not going to burn the food off. Instead you sleep on it and that also is not healthy.

Combine just those two elements and it's really not hard to put on 20 pounds in a month or two.
