Its all in the context of the situation. In 1994 you couldn't even hear the anthem bc the garden was so loud. Its understood and accepted in that situation. It really was unnecessary at your Mets game and if you did offend some people I hope you apologized and dropped it. You have to understand that peoples lives have been permanently changed and that song means something deeper to them then it apparently means to you.
