It's not something to be triffled with, nor is it uniquely Russian.

Supporting your popular local sports club can be very useful for almost any kind of business.

It buys your organisation a good name in society, it gives you good contacts with both other businesses and administration on all levels.

So I don't think one should look at this from a simple bottom line analysis.

You also have to look at the marketing and networking value of owning/supporting a team.

Income doesn't always come in raw cash.

But I think that the KHL economy will settle a bit after some years.
