you just contradicted yourself. if you have to say "when he plays w/ the right linemates" that instantly means that he is not a true #1 center. a TRUE #1 center will play well no matter who his linemates are. Sakic, Modano, Lecalvalier, Thornton etc.

A true #1 center makes all the players around him better, not the players around him makes him better. Hence Gomez is a good complimentary player, but not a focal point of an offense.
