Either way I think Umberger was going to test the market.
He also really didn't appear interested in being with the Rangers to be perfectly honest.
He showed up late for practice, pretty much gave a half effort and didn't really look all that interested in auditioning.
That's not to say he won't be a Ranger, but a player who waits until April isn't going to suddenly beg for a job when he has two months till he's a free agent and on the flip side no one knows what to expect in this league anymore.
I don't like Sather but i will say this. With a labor strike coming and an almost certain cap to follow it, it's kind of a rock and a hard place situation.
Sign him and people say "you bid against yourself and every other prospect who comes along is going to wonder why Umberger is getting a million dollars after not impressing you and sitting out a year".
Don't sign him and everyone brings up the "you let him slip away" routine.
I don't think people realize just how scared a lot of teams are with this lockout coming.
